Good hydration has been referred to as one of the most important aspects of the diet by the BDA.  Hydration plays a key role in all aspects of health, and varies throughout the lifecycle I.e., at its lowest in elderly & highest in new-borns.

Functions

  • Regulate temperature – we lose water/sweat when hot which cools us down, so we need water to replace the lost fluids.
  • Lubricates joints & eyes
  • Aids digestion
  • Role in skin health

Results of dehydration:

  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • Poor Concentrations
  • Digestive issues i.e., constipation

Sources of hydration:

  • It is important to remember that water is not the only source of fluid in the diet. However, it is one of the best as it provides no extra calories or harm to teeth.
  • Other sources of fluid include tea/coffee, milk, juices, smoothies, sugary drinks, energy drinks & sports drinks.
  • Fluid is also present in food, and this should be accounted for but not relied on as the sole contributor in the diet.
